TEACHING

Teaching philosophy

Conducting begins long before the first gesture.

A lesson may begin with a score on the table, a question, or simply with listening. What do you hear? What does the music need? And how can you make that clear to the musicians in front of you?

For Giuseppe Montesano, technique is never an end in itself. A gesture matters because of what it can make possible: a shared breath, a change of colour, a different energy, a clearer sense of direction.

Teaching therefore begins with the individual. One student may need greater freedom in the gesture, another more clarity in preparing a score, another the confidence to trust what they already hear. The work moves between score study, conducting technique, rehearsal practice and musical imagination, with one central aim: to help each conductor develop an independent musical voice and the means to communicate it clearly.

HMTM München

Teaching at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München

Since 2022, Giuseppe Montesano has taught orchestral conducting at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München, combining individual work with young conductors with regular projects with the Hochschulsymphonieorchester. This combination of individual study and direct orchestral experience lies at the heart of his teaching.

Private online lessons

Individual conducting lessons are also available online.

Each lesson is shaped around the conductor’s individual needs and may focus on score preparation, conducting technique, rehearsal strategy, or preparation for examinations, auditions and competitions.

The starting point may be a single score, a technical question or a specific musical challenge. What matters is not to apply a fixed method, but to identify what each conductor needs in order to move forward.

Workshops

Where everything comes together.

Workshops offer conductors extensive podium time with an orchestra, providing the opportunity to put into practice what has been developed in individual lessons and to work on gesture, rehearsal technique, listening and interpretation.

Participants can explore repertoire in depth, experiment, receive immediate feedback and refine their work through direct experience with the orchestra.

Sessions can also be professionally recorded, providing video material for auditions, competitions and professional portfolios
